He decided not to proceed, and somewhere (no idea where, now) I had come across an ancient quote which went “The divine art of musick toucheth the very Soule”. The intimacy Lupu achieves in the G-flat impromptu sounds almost personal, an effect heightened by the transparent engineering. He sings the gorgeous melodies with limpid, beautiful tone. I had set up a company for a client who was importing jewellery and called it Divine Art. Lupu is a keyboard poet, and Schuberts lyrical gems seem as though they were written for his interpretive artistry. At the same time there were two amazing coincidences (or fate intervened). A bell rang in my head and I said that I’d arrange a recording (once the work was complete). 90 and 142 that are nowadays regarded as the most significant examples of the then emerging romantic piano piece. “You recall I said that I had the urge to run a record company while still at junior school?
